Peter Hain Fund

From Miss J. A. Stocks

Sir: If D. S. Fraser Harris's letter on the Peter Hain Fund (December 4) were not so malicious its ridiculous inaccuracies and omissions could be ignored. To deal with all the points would take up too much space so I will confine myself to the 'background details' of the HaM family which are well known tb me. First, let me say that to be restricted under South Africa's very wide Suppression of Communism Act merely implies active opposition to the apartheid government: witness the many Liberals and churchmen who have been restricted under this Act. Second, let me quote from ' Kontakion For You Departed' by Alan Patton, who was President of the South African Liberal Party of which Mr and Mrs Hain were leading members: "Nor will one easily forget the courage and generosity of the Hain family. They made a home for Ann Harris and her infant son the moment the arrest became known, and were her comfort and support throughout those terrible months. One need not say what construction cruel people put upon this act. The Heins disregarded such malice; they saw a job to be done, they thought it right to do it, and they did it well."
