THIRTEEN HUNDRED years ago the King of Mercia built a

monastery beside the River Nene. On this site stands Peter- borough Cathedral, one of the finest mediwval churches of the West, and the thirteenth centenary has been chosen as the moment to launch an appeal for funds to carry out the much- needed works of repair and restoration. The sum of £100,000 is needed to ensure an income sufficient to preserve the ancient fabric.
