A CORRECTION.

SIR,—In your article, in the Spectator of April 12th, on "Democracy and Justice," you refer to "the French noble who said that God thought twice before he damned a man of

his quality." Is there not a slip of memory in the allusion thus made ? Carlyle ("French Revolution," Book I., chap. quotes the incident in question from Dula.ure, in the following terms :—" One has still partly a feeling with the lady Mare- chain: 'Depend upon it, Sir, God thinks twice before damning a man of that quality.'
