the letter in your issue of June 5th from Mr. John Temple asking whether you remember the American Civil War and on which side your sympathies were in that struggle, perhaps you will allow me to ask that gentle- man whether he remembers the war between the United States and Spain, and the projected coalition of certain European Powers against the United States, and also which of the European Powers it was that prevented the coalition from "materialising." I should also like to ask him the farther question: In the event of our going under as the result of a European war, what length of time would elapse until it became the turn of the United States to be attacked P-1 am,
