Skinflint's City Diary

Poor Mrs Edwina Coven was first elected and then rejected two weeks ago as the City's first woman Alderman.

Mrs Coven's sin, in the Lord Mayor's eyes, was to say in a letter that she didn't intend to stand for election and then did so,

Why a nice woman like Mrs Coven should want to join a mediaeval institution and be an Alderman is neither here nor there. Why should they want to keep out someone for what appears to be a piddling breach of manners is past understanding.

This is all a lot of fun, however, for those of us on the outside,, because some of us still aroundl remember that Common Councillorman who later became an alderman, I think, and thus a possible Lord Mayor (heaven forbid!), who was the most blatantl stealer of other people's money entrusted to his care in all the City's dark history.
