Send him to Coventry

Sir: In his article (`The Emperor and the Sun Goddess', 17 November), Murray Sayle seems to be disoriented.

Rolls Royce Motors is based about 60 miles north-west of Derby, in Crewe, Cheshire, and has been building motor cars there since 1946. The Rolls Royce in Derby produces aero engines.

I was unable to watch the television coverage of the enthronement, but I can- not believe that the Emperor was conveyed behind a Rolls Royce aero engine, no matter how small. Toyota is erecting a car-producing plant at Burnaston, near Derby, but I can assure Mr Sayle that Ford is still at Dagenham and has, to the best of my knowledge, no plans to move to Milton Keynes.

I suspect, however, that Mr Sayle is not alone in his ignorance, and that a straw poll conducted south of Watford would elicit some very interesting answers to the ques- tion, 'Where are Rolls Royce cars built?'

Those of us who live and work in the industrial heartland of this nation find such ignorance offensive, and feel that Mr Sayle should be sent to Coventry.
