Dogs eating dogs
I make a very safe prophecy. In the next two months dog will be doing its level best to eat dog in Fleet Street. The tabloid Mail- Sketch comes out on Monday. The old Mail will then disappear for good. The Sketch is supposed to continue for a few weeks. Fleet Street rumour (for what it's worth. which often as not is nothing) says that the last day of the Sketch could in fact be this Saturday. I would not be surprised. Saturday is May Day: a fine day for a new crop of redund- ancies.
1 heard also of a comic cock-up in the earlier Mail-Sketch redundancies. Inadvert- ently, the gardening correspondents of both papers got the push. Sudden panic: who's to do the Chelsea Flower Show, and who's to write the bits in between all the lovely lawn- mower adverts? Asked to return on a free- lance basis from his redundancy, the reply of one of the gardening correspondents was distinctly earthy.
