It is good new that the Government Party in the

Irish Free State has had a sweeping victory. The complete returns will not be known for another day or two, but when we write on Thursday, the Government Party has secured 29 seats, the Republicans 12, the Independents 6, the Farmers 5, and Labour 3. It looks as though the Government Party might have a clear majority over all its opponents and critics. Out of eleven Ministers, eight have so far been elected, including President Cosgravc, General Richard Mulcahy (the Minister of Defence), Mr. Kevin O'Higgins (the Minister for Home Affairs), and Professor J. MacNeill (the Minister of Education). In Louth, on the other hand, Mr. Frank Aitken, Mr. De Valera's Chief of Staff, was at the top of the Poll. Mr. De Valera himself was also returned by a large majority. We have written on the elections in our first leading article.
