Loyalty to the Shah

Sir: Your correspondent Taki (High life, 4 August) attacks Anthony Blunt's friends for defending him after his exposure, and appears to attack me for allegedly not defending the Shah after his departure.

I cannot comment on the conversation Taki claims he had with me. I was not in New York on the day he claims it occurred, and I am not aware that I have ever met Taki. His alleged outrage at something I am supposed to have said is a piece of self-serving fiction.

As to the bigger issue, let me say that the 'I hate it when you run over a hedgehog.' Shah was without doubt a dedicated refor- mer who also committed monumental errors. To ignore these errors, far from being a demonstration of loyalty, would not only belittle his many achievements but deny the reality of the Islamic revolution.
