The solemnity and precision of the words of the Oath

are obvious. In swearing allegiance and announcing simultaneously in a manifesto that they had no intention of obeying, the Republicans not only perjured themselves, but made the whole of their past agitation ridiculous. No comment that we could make would deepen the impression of disgust produced by the Republican action upon all men who cherish honour and distinguish between sense and nonsense. We cannot help wondering what admonitions have come—for surely some must have conic —from the Roman Catholic Hierarchy to those Republi. cads who are in intimate contact with their Church.
