Notes for Collectors

THE sales of the past season were remarkably successful, and the interest was maintained up to the very end of July. Prices were higher than ever, not only because money has depreciated in value but mainly because there are now many more collectors of books, manuscripts, pictures and works of art in general. The numerous well-endowed galleries and libraries in America have helped greatly to increase the

demand for the artistic and literary possessions of impov- erished Europeans, and no reasonable person need lament the fact. Those who cry out whenever an old master crosses the Atlantic are usually ignorant of the extent and unsur- passed quality of our national collections.
