The Bible Story Philip Turner illustrated by Brian Wildsmith (our 35s). A kind of Lamb's tales from the Bible, in which Mr Turner's admirably clear and orderly text is accom- panied on every page by brilliantly glowing illustrations, from strange, enchanting bears in Eden to plump, madly bolting Gadarene pigs. What is extraordinary is the imaginative directness and simplicity with which Mr Wild- smith depicts the fearsome peaks of Sinai or Carmel, the menacing solemnity of vast armies marching in a multi-coloured desert around the walls of Jericho; or the sense of treachery and pain and radiant light in the New Testament: note especially the towering forecourt and the line of tiny, huddled citizens before Pilate's judgment seat, the licking, scarlet flames of Pentecost, and the hummocky, gaily patterned hills of Patmos where the story ends, with St John at work on Revelation.
