THE ENGLISH HfSTORICAL REVIEW.

Professor Pollard completes in this issue his valuable essay on "Council, Star Chamber and Privy Council under the 'udors." He maintains that Elizabeth kept her executive Privy Council distinct from the Judicial Star Chamber and that the Stuarts by virtually merging the two bodies did much tb provoke the opposition which cost Charles I. his head. The President of Trinity, Oxford, contributes two mediaeval ghost stories which may be set beside those printed recently by the Provost of Eton. One ghost threw Thomas of Ely out of bed for thirteen nights running and thus at last per- suaded him to follow to a place where a spectral nun warned him that certain neighbours had neglected to pay their tithes. The origin of such a tale is nat obscure. .
