It is evidently suspected that the attack on the British Expedition to Western China and the murder of Mr. Margary were prompted by the Burmese Court, and it is now reported that the King has occupied some territory to which we have aclaim. The Viceroy proposed a mixed Commission to settle boundaries, but the King would not hear of it, and occupied the territory, a kind of treatment to which in Asia we do not submit. Sir. Douglas Forsyth, who is never used for unim- portant work, accordingly goes to Mandalay, to insist that the King shall give way, and troops are to be sent to British Burmalt "as 'a precautionary measure." The King has no real physical strength at his disposal, but he has a few troops trained by a European, and a confirmed notion that he is, or ought to be, Lord of the World.
