THE HEALTH OF NEW YORK.

[To THE EDITOR OF THE "SPECTATOR.") SIE,—I see in a recent number of the Spectator an extra- ordinary statement made by some one who professes knowledge of things in New York. This gentleman says that there were 2,800 more deaths in January this year in the city, than there were in January last year. We in New York know full well that we have plenty of difficulties to overcome, and deeply- rooted evils to assail, but there is no reason why the city should be slandered in this absurd way. You will see from the returns which I send you, and which have been made to me by the Health Board, and are official, that the deaths in January, 1898, for the whole city were 5,138, and for January, 1899, 5,736, or 598 more, not 2,800. The Spectator is so excel- lently well informed, and we all on this side owe so much to the admirable way in which the grave questions of the last few months have been treated in it, that I presume to send you this correction.—I am, Sir, d7c., W. S. RA1NSFORD. St. George's Rectory, 209 East 16th Street, NeW York, May 4th.
