Through a glass darkly

Sir: Michael Portal() is so enchanted by the precision with which the Bayreuth Festival is run that he swallows a complete 'rip-off' with touching naivety. 'Champagne, in 100 cc measures, is so exactly served that the top of the meniscus just grazes the white line on the glass,' he writes CA small town in Germany', 6 SepteMber). As fluid is to be measured from the bottom of the meniscus, not the top, I estimate that he is being denied some 5 cc of the no doubt very expensive liquid with every glass purchased. If all the Wagner fans are so gullible, there must be a nice little boost to the bar profits.

Perhaps the Bundesbank has contrived a new Euro-standard without any scientific body noticing? Or is this just a local variant of the German economic miracle? Good to see those sceptic Tories as vigilant as ever.
