Sir: Having recently graduated, I must applaud Peter Jones for

his article ('Why I'm off, 13 September). I too was the vic- tim of administrative anarchists and over- crowded seminars. Fortunately, and thank- fully, I just missed 'semesters', which I con- sider ideally designed for the intellectually lightweight layabout. The traditional university degree is sadly being ruined. Political correctness, 'market forces' and too many students are the dam- aging elements of the higher education sys- tem. It is a pitiful situation when lecturers of Mr Jones's calibre and enthusiasm are greatly needed, and in truth, are largely admired by students. Government incom- petence means such intellectuals will be lost to the educational system. 'Bugger the system', Mr Jones? I'm afraid the system is already buggered!
