HUMANE SLAUGHTER OF PIGS [To the Editor of the SPECTATOR.]

Sot,—The enclosed letter, which appeared in the Sheffield Telegraph of December 12th, will, I am sure, both. interest and gratify you. It is very largely owing to the Spectator's persistent advocacy of humane methods in the slaughter of animals for food that the pig trap mentioned in the letter was introduced to this country, and the firm of which I am a director was, I believe, the very first to use it. It is now just two years since it was installed and it continues to be most satisfactory in every way.—I am, Sir, &c., Paternoster Row, Sheffield. A. C. DAVY.

[The letter, which is too long-to quote in full, states that the humane-killer is used for the stunning of all cattle, calves, and pigs in the Sheffield abattoir, and that the pig-trap is used for the- humane casting of all pigs.--Rn. Spedator]
