The Gap

Timothy was buried on Friday in the church- yard of St. Mary's, Walkern, a village in a quiet hollow of Hertfordshire near the Essex border. The little church was full of people thinking of the lively, flashing young life so suddenly quenched. For us on the Spectator who remem- ber him at editorial meetings on a Monday morning, brimming with ideas, his felt pen squeaking over the paper as he doodled or took notes, there will be less zest and colour in life now that he is gone. And, as.well as his talent and his cheerfulness, one felt, I think, that he was a good man, one of generous impulses and the courage to stand up for them. He has left a gap for those who knew him, and I do not sec how it is to be filled.
