A Souvenir of the War of 1870-7E, .from the Commencement

to the Fall of Paris ; illustrated with Portraits of Eminent Personages and Generals, with Views of Strasburg, Sedm, and Metz. By William Simpson, Esq. ; an introduction, by Dr. D Iran, F.S.A. ; a history of the War, by Henry Hell, Esq. ; and a large map of France. (Madam Macdonald, and Macgregor, London, Liverpool, and Manchester.)-,The chief value of this book is that it gives very excellent portraits of the principal actors in the great war between France and Germany. The Emperors on both sides, the new and the old, are both given with great power, also the ex- Empress Euguie (the new one, the Empress Augusta, does not appear), and the Prince Imperial, Prince Bismarck, the Grown Prince, Prince Frederick Charles, Von Warder, Von Goshen, &c., and some of the loading French Generals and statesmen, —MacMahon, Bazaine, Ularich, Bour- baki, Garibaldi, Gambetta, Thiere, Fevre, &c., dm. The faces we miss are those of General d'A.urelles de Paladines, General Chancy, General

Faidherbes, General Ricciotti Garibaldi, and General Cromer, all of whom played a much greater part on the French side than many of

those included in the album, e. g , Frossard, Canrobert, Do Failly, Lebrun, dm. The book is, for the rest, what it calls itself, a very valuable " souvenir " of the war, and is extremely well got up.
