Portrait of the Week

ON MONDAY the new Members began swearing in, Dr Horace King was re-elected Speaker and on Thursday the Queen opened the new ses- sion, the sixteenth of her reign. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Heath, meanwhile an- nounced his new streamlined (`steamlined'— Guardian) Shadow Cabinet which excluded Messrs Lloyd, Sandys, Marples and Boyd-Car- penter, but introduced a woman, Miss Mervyn Pike, to cover the social services. Women, how- ever, were excluded from the jury of the Moors Murder trial which also opened this week and the end of the first day found the sister-in- law of the counsel for the defence murdered in her Salford dress shop. A discouraging set of March trade figures saw exports down by £20 million with the prospect of a further £70 million being added to the annual import bill because of the rise in the price of Chilean copper.
