Mohamed's malignity

From Mr Martyn Gregory Sir: That Steve Anderson and Richard Belfield, the producers of ITV's deeply flawed Diana: Secrets Behind the Crash, ignored all the serious criticisms of their programme that I made in my article ('How Fayed is paying for his Diana lies', 8 Jan- uary) was revealing if unsurprising. How- ever, they also state, with characteristic inaccuracy, that Neil Hamilton was `Mr Gregory's man' during his libel action against Mohamed Fayed, and that I am `deeply upset' about the outcome. This is not true. I have briefly encountered Mr Hamilton and his wife only twice — in pub- lic in the High Court during their trial and their lawyers spoke to me shortly before the trial. Until they read my book, Diana: The Last Days, the Hamilton camp was not aware of many of Fayed's lies about Diana, or of ITV's complicity in propagating them.

Contrary to Anderson's and Belfield's assertion, the judge made no decision on my description (written after the trial) of Fayed's extraordinary and malign influence on their ITV programme. Mr Justice Mor- land took the view that the trial was about Fayed's claim to have corrupted Neil Hamilton by paying him cash for questions, not about his success in corrupting ITV's current affairs output.
