CHECKING THE LIBERALS have noted recently a number of your

cor-

respondents falling into the same complacent error as Angus Maude does (Spectator, March 15), in say- ing that 'the Liberal revival has been clearly, and perhaps fatally, checked.' The same thing was being said by your columnists bet‘veen spring and autumn of last year : then came the November by-elections and it was seen that Tory and Socialist candidates were still losing votes, and Liberal candidates still gaining them; at every by-election since 1959. How 'clearly,' then, has the Liberal revival been checked —even if we charitably assume that Mr. Maude's 'fatally' is a bit of Tory wishful thinking?

There have been no by-elections since November.

Since they are the only real guide to the electorate's opinion I suggest Mr. Maude and his friends wait for the next batch. It is my opinion the Conserva- tive Party is in for a very rude shock—hut my opinion on this is worth no more than is Mr. Maude's.
