The Sandwich election was virtually settled before there was any

Liberal candidate in the field. It appears that the Con- servative candidate, Mr. Crompton-Roberts, had very early secured Committee-rooms in almost all the public-houses, and that when Sir Julian Goldsmid came forward, there was practi- cally no chance left for a Liberal candidate,—the Sandwich electors being very apt, it appears, to vote with the presiding genius of the nearest and most convenient Committee-room. Mr. Crompton-Roberts polled 1,145 votes, to only 705 given for Sir Julian Goldsmid.
