Don't sneer at Fiji

Sir: Gerda Cohen (24 April) describes the Fiji battalion in Sinai as members of an 'ut- terly useless ... motley conglomeration ... kitted out ... like a promotional team for the Citrus Marketing Board'. The descrip- tion is offensive and hurtful. It is also nonsense. After distinguished service in the second world war and in Malaya the Royal Fiji Military Forces for the last four years have served as members of UNIFIL in the Lebanon. Their outstanding contribution has been widely acknowledged, not least in your own columns. So far •13 fine young lives have been lost in the defence of peace 9,000 miles from home. Fiji was the first country to volunteer troops for the MFO. It should be the last to be sneered at in this way.
