NEWS OF THE WEEK.

INCE we last wrote one of the greatest and most terrible of 1.3 battles has taken place on the Somme, ending, as we have described in detail elsewhere, in a very considerable gain of ground, and in the capture of many prisoners and guns and much material. Most important of all, there are now vast opportunities for the future prosecution of that great operation in progress on the Western Front—an operation which, though there may be lulls, will only end when the war ends. For we may feel sure that Sir Douglas Haig will not loosen his grip upon the enemy. His teeth are in, and he is not the kind of commander to be shaken off by the guile of the foe.
