The Duke's tubes

Sir: The fog in the Mediterranean seems thicker than that in the Channel, and Mr Braham's irony (Letters, 17 January) is mis- placed. Most of Europe does not 'endure' BST because endurance is not called for. At present it is broad daylight in Vienna at 07.30 BST whereas in London it is almost dark at 08.30 BST, and the 'misery' to be endured is not in Vienna.

Warsaw and Galway have the same clock time because, we were told, our closer economic working with the Continent re- quired this. Would Mr Braham or some other advocate of BST explain how New York and Los Angeles get along without such expedients?

Sir: I am sure that Central European Time suits Central Europe, and that Mr Braham (Letters, 17 January) finds it bearable in Menorca. Its suitability for a group of islands situated mainly to the north and west of the Continent is another matter.
