Casualties

Sir: Violence in any form cannot be con- doned and thus it is unacceptable for David Harounoff (Letters, 3 July) to 'whitewash' Israeli actions in the Lebanon because atrocities occur elsewhere.

Exact casualty figures from the Lebanon are difficult to determine partly owing to the horrendous scale of the destruction and partly to the reluctance of the Israel] authorities to allow any independent witnesses, including relief workers from the United Nations and its agencies, to see the extent of the devastation. However, estimates published by the Lebanese government and the International Red Cross put the cost of the conflict so far at 14,000 dead, 20,000 injured and 600,000 homeless, mostly owing to Israeli air at- tacks on largely civilian targets.
