We note with deep regret the reports of the loss

of our submarine ' E3,' which appear to be confirmed. When one thinks of the gallantry and self-sacrifice of the officers and men who man our under-water vessels of war, and of what their country owes them, it is difficult to maintain a fitting composure. Yet such composure must be maintained to match the dignity and splendour of their acts. Truly they " went to their graves like beds." Though none will ever know their place of burial, they have the noblest tomb the world can afford—the " humming water" which they guarded so faithfully that England may live secure.
