`SPRING'

A National Painting Competition for Professional Young Artists

Adam & Company Bankers and The Spectator are pleased to announce the launch of their Fifth Annual Art Prize, which this year is in association with the Appeal on behalf of the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.

The theme for this year's competition is 'Spring'.

Once again it is the sponsors' intention that the theme should be interpreted broadly. Spring is the first season of the year and the one in which fresh vegetation begins. This is a great theme which has been addressed by artists as diverse as Goya and Bonnard. But we speak also of the spring of someone's life, of a growth and the flowering that is in part metaphorical. A spring may also be a watery source of refreshment and renewal or the small trickle that becomes a great river. It can be other things as well: those taking part may interpret our title as literally or symbolically as they wish. Appropriately the two major exhibitions of entrants' work will be staged in the spring of 1992. Entries should carry individual titles while reflecting the overall theme set by the sponsors.

Artists must be under 40 and must be resident in the United Kingdom.

The first prize will be £2,000 plus purchase or commission. The second prize will be £1,000 and the third prize £500.

The winners and up to 60 highly commended entries will be exhibited in The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh and The Concourse Gallery, Barbican Centre, London, when there will be an opportunity to sell the pictures, with the Appeal on behalf of the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh receiving commission on sales. The award will also be the subject of a colour feature in The Spectator.

The Judges are: Giles Auty, The Spectator's art critic; James Laurenson, Managing Director of Adam & Company; Richard Calvocoressi, Keeper of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art; John Wonnacott, major figurative painter; John Lumley, a director of Christie's and former Head of Christie's Impressionist and Modern Picture Department and James Miller, Chairman of the Appeal on behalf of the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.
