Powys redivivus

Sir: As a long-time devotee of the works of John Cowper Powys I was delighted to read that A.N. Wilson has now discovered this great British writer (Diary, 11 January). Powys has been mentioned in your columns before, notably by P.J. Kavanagh who praised The Art of Happiness (Books, 22 January 1983).

Wilson is wrong when he says that Powys is no longer in print. Penguin still publish Wolf Solent in their Twentieth Century Classics series. But Wilson is right to bemoan the fact that Powys is much neglected. This is a situation that The Powys Society is trying to remedy, and any reader whose appetite has been whetted by Wilson's enthusiasm can find out more by writing to The Secretary, 39 Church Street, Bridgwater, Somerset TA6 5AT.
