There is both good and bad in the news from

China. The Foreign Office has scored a real success in getting.the signature of Mr. Chen to the Hankow agreement. That is an event by itself which cannot be undone wh3teVer may happen elsewhere. We have written about it in a -leading article and here we turn to the struggle for Shanghai. Marshal Sun Chuan-fang has been badly *defeated by the advancing Cantonese troops and has fallen back on Sungkiang after successively losing Hangchow and Kashing. Kashing was the last stronghold in the Chekiang Province. Sungkiang is about sixty miles sonth-eaSt of Shanghai. It is still-doubtful what. help- Sun Chuan-fang will receive from the north, but it is said that Chang Tso-lin, the Manchurian War Lord, is sending help, and that 10,000 soldiers of Chang Chung-charr.i army have already moved from Shantung to Nanking.
