After a long succession of legal hearings the Supreme Court of the United States has finally declined to permit any further appeals in the effort of Harry F. Sinclair, the oil magnate, to escape serving his ninety-day sentence in Washington jail for his refusal to answer the questions of the Senate Committee investigating the oil scandals. This is an impressive refutation of the idea that anyone of great wealth in America can escape the penalty of an illegal act, when imprisonment is involved. The offence in this case was widely condemned by American opinion.
