CHILDREN'S PRAYERS.

[TO THE EDETOR OF THE " SPECrATOR."]

Sia,—A good many years ago I also searched in yain for a very simple first prayer, in verse, for children. Having had some experience in writing for little children, I ventured on the follow- ing, which was .published on a card to hang over a child's cot (National Society's Depository, Westminster). It is in language which a child of two or three years old can well understand, and it expresses the elementary ideas of (1) Petition for bodily and spiritual needs; . (2) Confession of sin; (3) Amendment of life; (4) Thanksgiving for mercies; (5) Intercession for others. It may be sung to Haydn's tune to "Onward, Christian Soldiers ":-

"GOD bless Father, Mother, Sisters, Brothers, Friends .

(Morning.) (Evening.) GOD our Father, bear me; GOD our Father, hear me; Keep us safe all day; Keep us safe all night; Let us grow like Jesus; Watch while we are sleeping, Lead us in His Way. Till the morning light.

Make us good and gentle, Kind and loving too, Pleasing GOD in all things That we say- or do.

All that makes us happy Comes from GOD above; So we thank Thee, Father, For Thy care and love.

GOD hear me, for Jesus' Sake. Amen."

Hoping this may be of service to your correspondent (I believe it may still be obtained from. the National Society).—I am, Sir, &c., Make us very sorry For all naughty ways : Help us to be better In the coming days.

All that makes us happy Conies from GOD above, So we thank Thee, Father, For Thy care and love.
