A Student at Waugh

Sir: Mr Auberon Waugh suggests. in. the course of a disagreeable review that during Jais 'tragically brief stay' at Christ Church my colleague, Dr J. I. M. Stewart, was Senior Censor. This is nonsense.

Mr Waugh came up to Christ Church in October 1959, having been elected to an exhibition in English in December 1956 with Dr Stewart as his chief extuniner. In June 1960, after three terms of residence, he was 'rusticated' (i.e. asked to continue his studies out of residence) because he had twice failed to pass the preliminary ex- amination in Philosophy, Politics and Economics which were the subjects he had chosen to read in preference to English. During this period, the brevity of which is entirely to be ascribed to Mr Waugh's intellectual shortcomings, the Senior Censor of Christ Church was Mr Steven Watson.
