Arms for Israel

Sir: There can surely have been no greater act of treachery in recent times than that committed by the British government in refusing to send war materials to Israel, nor any greater hypocrisy than the reason given for their decision.

Where would this country have been in 1940 if America had refused us weapons in order to be able to strike a 'posture of peace?' Sir Alec Douglas Home says Britain will not abandon Israel. Didn't he and his kind say the same of Czechoslovakia in 1938? But Israel doesn't want Sir Alec's concern or compassion; she wants the war material which is morally hers, and some of which, since it has been paid for, is legally hers. Theft is theft, though having been committed by the British government, it is (inevitably) motivated by the highest ideals. Did the contracts for the 850 Centurion tanks which Israel had at the beginning of this war contain the proviso, even in the smallest print "We will send you all the spare parts and ammunition you need except when you are fighting for your existence?"
