The Soudan, '96. By H. C. Seppings Wright. (Horace Cox.)—

Mr. Wright, having been in Ashantee on behalf of the Illustrated London News, was sent out, three weeks afterwards, to represent that paper in the advance against the Dervishes. The plan of this little volume permits us to see specimens of his work with the pencil, while it also shows us what he can do with his pen. He gives graphic pictures of men, places, and things. Slatin Pasha, for instance, as described by him, is a wonderfully picturesque figure. Mr. Wright is one of those who think that the success of the Expedition might have been pushed a little farther. But there are "wheels within wheels" in Africa as elsewhere.
