Mr Begin's Israel

Sir: It is good that the Spectator's columns contain forthright condemnation of Menachem Begin, and that Simon Court- auld (Notebook, 14 August) is so careful to distance himself from any taint of anti- semit ism.

But not so good that he slips into an equally obnoxious if more up-to-date pre- /Udice — blaming the Sephardi Jews for Mr Begin's policies. As soon blame all Americans for voting for a president whose administration may well have known far More than most Israelis about the background to this war. Not to mention supplying the wherewithal.

I know many Sephardi Jews, including one of their main organisations from North Africa, who are opposed to Mr Begin and the war, and ready for a real peace with the Palestinians.
