Sir: I have read with great interest the correspondence following

your article on abortion, and have noticed that most, if not all the letters have been written by male readers who have been concerned with the moral issues involved. As a woman who has been through the unpleasant experience, I feel I am qualified to say that abortion is a necessary evil.

My pregnancy was planned, although I was not married to the father, but due to his tragic demise, I was left in a position that was quite untenable. III had gone ahead and had the baby, I would have been quite unable to provide my child with a stable home, and would have caused great hardship not only to the child, but also my family. I therefore, reluctantly decided to take the course which would give misery to one person only — namely myself. The emotional scars left on me are greater than I can describe, and while I do not claim that what I did was morally right, I still do not see what other course I could reasonably have followed.
