THE CONFUSION may be deep-seated. NZ/hen railways first came to Kent, the citi- zens of Canterbury insisted that their line to Whitstable must have a tunnel. No self- respecting railway, so they thought, would be complete without one. They and their line went out of their way to obtain one. They were so proud of it that they put gates at each end of it, and fastened them at night, to make sure that no one came and stole it.
