Plain and able

Sir: Paul Johnson may well be correct about the failings of John Major, but it is both impolite and unfair to make judgments on our Prime Minister's brother (And another thing, 20 January). To my knowledge Mr Major-Ball has no responsibility for the running of this coun- try, is a private citizen, has sought no favours or advancement, is a good family man and is a loyal and loving brother. There is nothing `ridiculous' or even 'amaz- ing' about him. His ordinariness and above qualities are attributes which set him above many journalists.
