SIR.—Mr. Barber's letter gives the impression that what he calls

the "working classes" (a completely meaningless and mischievously mis- leading expression, retained merely for the purpose of keeping alive class prejudice, since all of us have to work these days) have to get along on far smaller incomes than the middle classes. Is this so In a certain "working-class" family I know the father earns about £8 a week, the daughter £6 and the mother £3—total £17, or approxi- mately £850 a year.—Yours faithfully, A. P.
