Goodbye to the left

Sir: It is nice to know that John Braine has seen the light, but his cheap gibe about 'ever- changing fashions in psychiatry' does little credit to his name (19 July).

Fashion has been changing ever since we crawled from the swamps. Would he have us go back to the insensitive and unintelligent treatment of mental illness that prevailed in 'snake-pit' establishments?

At least, psychiatrists are trying to under- stand and help the emotionally disturbed. If an alert psychiatrist can diagnose a „brain tumour or dangerous depression before violence is committed, then society benefits.

Some criminals are undoubtedly deranged, and some may be so depraved that it would be justifiable to obliterate them.

But is euthanasia any worse than capital punishment?
