Bats in the belfry

CHRISTOPHER HOLLIS

It is announced that the Rev Leonard Birch, Vicar of Bredon, wishes to sell the spire of his church to America. 'We in the Church of England are overburdened with buildings,' he says.

In summer time at Bredon The Reverend Leonard Birch Says, 'Come and pray, good people. Good people, come to church, Nor leave us in the lurch.'

The steeple's cracked and crumbled, It's no good to pretend.

The building's overburdened.

It costs too much to mend.

We'll sell it in the end.

While Bredon tower is tumbling And Bredon bells ajar, The bells that rang at Bredon Will sound their chimes afar And ring at Scranton, Pa.

Though men at times are sober, More usually they're mad.

We'll sell a Worcester steeple, Now that the times are bad, To keep a Shropshire Lad.
