The Germans may of course be strong enough to overwhelm

the Rumanian trenches at the first rush and re-enact the tragedies of Liege and Namur. It is far more likely, however, that they will be obliged to sit down in front of the Rumanians, dig themselves in, and then " sap up " in the good old way of Flanders till a No-Man's. Land of some two or three hundred yards'width has been established— a deliberate if exciting process. But if this is the end, then " hats off " to the Rumanian Generals and the Rumanian armies for their success in carrying out war's most difficult operation—an orderly retreat ending in a Torres Vedras of the plains.
