1939 I was intrigued to find that conversation on the mess deck was almost confined to the use of one adjective which sometimes also did service as a verb. In the interim period it is a word I have not heard in use generally and have only seen it written on the walls of public lavatories and places of that sort.

I was greatly offended by the article 'Low life' in your issue of 5 December as it is written in the poorest possible taste and I notice that the same disgusting word occurs several times in it. I have always regarded the Spectator as a journal of high literary standards and of good taste and if this sort of article is a sample of future writing I shall cancel my subscription with regret.
