Reporting the General

Sir: Mr Thompson's note (26 May) of British press coverage of President de Gaulle's press con- ference contains a number of inaccuracies. The Times and Guardian reports were not identical. Both took the translation of President de Gaulle's answer from Reuter but The Times report in- cluded a translation by our own correspondent in Paris of the rest of the press conference and gave a whole page to the report Mr Thompson seems to have overlooked some three columns of text which appeared in The Times but not in any other newspaper. 4 William Rees-Mogg The Times, Printing House Square, London EC4 J. W. M. Thompson writes: Mr Rees-Mogg seems to have overlooked the fact that my note referred only to President de Gaulle's comments on Britain's approach to the Six: and as he confirms, The 'Times and the Guardian both took their ver- sion of these comments from Reuter. I agree there were several other interesting items in The Times that day.
