The very best he can do is to stand efficiently on the defensive and hope that the Powers will somehow commit suicide by knocking their heads against his earthworks. We do not believe that even he would dare to contract the German line by retiring to the Rhine, though no doubt that, from the purely abstract military point of view, would now be Germany's best policy.
