Woman scorned?

Sir: As the most recent winner of the Standard/Catherine Pakenham Award mentioned by Paul Johnson (The press, 23 January), I read his comments on the future of women in journalism with approval tempered by sadness.

The piece I submitted for the award was accepted by The Spectator several months ago, only to disappear in a cloud of polite waffle about topicality. The Standard pub- lished it this week.

Obviously, there are differences of opin- ion as to the merits or demerits of a particular piece; and I would scorn to ask for special treatment on the grounds of my sex. Nevertheless, one cannot help notic- ing that the first half of The Spectator remains dominated by contributions from male journalists. When, as Mr Johnson points out, there is no lack of talent among women in the same profession, one does not have to be a militant feminist to wonder why this is so.
