Sir: We must be grateful to Peter Singer for confirming

that those who support abortion must logically support infanticide, euthana- sia and the general devaluing of human life. However, he understates the profound shift in morality that his approach would entail.

If babies at birth are to be judged on their current mental capacities, then there can be no point at which 'full' value is attained. All rights must be on a sliding scale. The intelligent and the educated must be worth more than the unintelligent and the uneducated, young adults worth more than children or the aged. In a fire I must save my dog before my baby, and a university professor before a whole gang of manual labourers. No concept of equality of rights, human dignity or value can be accommodated within such a system.
